Gratton kept his marriage a secret from his gang for if they found out he didnt know what would happen if one of them was caught. They would tell about his wife and child on the way.
When James was only 5 his father had to leave, his father told him keep it up Doolin, you will make a good man some day. Then he kissed his mother and walked out of the door with a gun on each hip and his ammo belt slung over one shoulder. That was the last he saw of his father. Later he heard the he had been killed by another outlaw while on his way back home.
When James turned 20 he was living in town, the old sheriff had died and he had been given the position. He was a great sheriff; he chased off many outlaws from his city and hardly had to use his gun. But one night a gang going by the name of Doolin Dalton came into town, they tore up the place and killing many. James tried to stop them but was shot in the knee by there leader. The man jumped off his horse and knelt down by James who was laying on his back. The man swore up and down because he had shot his nephew. He was Bill Dalton, James on the other hand never knew his fathers last name so he never knew his uncles. From that night on James would have a perminunt limp in his left leg that would cause him pain from now and then.
